What’s your strongest August association? For me, it’s not just the misty, chilly mornings and cobwebs strung like fairy nets — it’s harvest time. Potato digging, sweetcorn gathering, plum picking… all those earthy little rituals that whisper, “Summer’s still here, but not for long.”
This month has its own magic and charm — let’s make the most of this green, already slightly golden time and celebrate it with a few freedom-loving morning activities. You’ll find the list below.
Pick-your-own fruit morning – August is peak time for blackberries, plums, and apples in many UK farms and hedgerows.
Make a summer breakfast you loved as a child and eat it outside (garden, balcony or any other place) – mine was a homemade waffle with freshly picked raspberries.
Wild swim or paddle in a lido or local river – Think Hampstead Ponds, the Lake District, or River Wye.
Visit a car boot sale or village fair – You never know what treasures (or freedom-themed mugs) you’ll find.
Enjoy a full English alfresco – Cook it yourself or head to a seaside café with outdoor tables.
Watch the mist rise over the countryside – If you’re in rural areas, morning mist in August can be dreamy. Glastonbury Tor is the perfect spot for it ( also a great place to visit at any time of the year).
Have a slow morning at the allotment (or pretend one with potted herbs from a supermarket) – Bonus: make a tea with your own mint!
Pop to a quiet beach before the crowds arrive – Especially doable if you’re near Cornwall, Norfolk, or Sussex.
Attend an early open-air yoga session or tai chi in the park – Some cities offer free classes in August.
Pack a thermos and go watch hot air balloons – Bristol Balloon Fiesta is in August, or catch a glimpse if you’re nearby!
Morning train to somewhere random – Pick a spot an hour away and be a tourist before lunch.
Stroll through a blooming heather field – Head to Yorkshire Moors or Surrey Hills while the purple is peaking.
Visit an ancient stone circle or hill fort at sunrise – Avebury, Rollright Stones, or even the lesser-known ones.
Collect fallen feathers, leaves, or beach treasures – Make a tiny nature display on your windowsill.
Write postcards from your own town – Share the freedom of “staying local” like it’s the latest travel trend.
Take a flask of tea and sit on a hill – Find your own tiny Wuthering Heights moment (minus the drama).
Make DIY jam or scones for breakfast – British berry season demands tribute.
Sketch or photograph your favourite local landmark bathed in morning light – Capture it while summer still lingers.
