January Blues? Let’s Turn That Frown Upside Down!”

Hey there, lovely readers! Itโ€™s that time of the year again when the holiday glitter fades and weโ€™re left staring down the barrel of January. Itโ€™s cold, itโ€™s dreary, and the festive cheer has packed up and left. But before you label January as the calendarโ€™s bad guy, letโ€™s unpack why it gets such a chilly reception and how we can warm up to it!

Why January Can Feel Like a Party Pooper

  • The Great Thaw: The magic of Christmas has melted away, leaving behind cold, often gloomy weather without the sparkle of holidays to cheer us up.
  • Taxing Times: If youโ€™re like me and juggling the joys of self-employment, January screams tax returns.
  • The December Dent: Our wallets are still recovering from the festive splurge, making January feel like a month-long Monday.
  • New Year, New You?: The pressure to reinvent ourselves with New Yearโ€™s resolutions can be overwhelming. Suddenly, everyoneโ€™s expected to be a fitter, healthier, more organized version of themselves overnight.
  • Short Days, Long Nights: The sun barely makes an appearance, and itโ€™s dark before you even leave work. Itโ€™s like Mother Nature is forcing us to hibernate!

How to Embrace January with Open Arms

  • Rethink the Narrative: Who says January has to be the worst? Letโ€™s scrub that label off and approach it with a fresh perspective.
  • Keep the Twinkle Alive: No rule says you must ditch all your festive decorations. Keep those twinkly lights and cozy vibes going with a more wintery theme.
  • Prep and Pep Talk: If January blues hit you every year, start a little pep talk with yourself. Why does it affect you? What can you change? Sometimes, understanding your feelings is half the battle.
  • Chase the Sun: Make it your mission to soak up every bit of daylight. Yes, it might be scarce, but itโ€™s precious! Set reminders, plan lunchtime walks, or just find a nice spot by a window to feel the sunโ€™s embrace.
  • Dress for Success: get the best winter wear you can afford – windproof, waterproof, snowproof, depending of your local weather. Trust me, being warm and dry can make a world of difference to your mood and health.
  • Nighttime Adventures: Embrace the dark! Safe, of course. Whether itโ€™s stargazing or spotting nocturnal critters, thereโ€™s a whole other world out there when the sun goes down. I am lucky to have a tawny owl living in the bushes just outside my windows. The late night hooting can be a bit annoying.
  • Tax Smarts: Get ahead of the tax game by sorting out your tax return early – ideally before December. Also it makes a great sense to double check it before the deadline – does it need adjustments or any additional info? Trust me, future you will be so grateful. Last year I almost missed the deadline because I was sure I’ve posted it, but as it happened I’ve forgot to press the final submission.
  • New Hobbies: Shake up your routine by trying something new. Ever thought about indoor rock climbing? Or perhaps a pottery class? Itโ€™s a great way to light that spark of interest and joy!

Wrapping It Up

January doesnโ€™t have to be the villain of our yearly saga. With a bit of preparation and a shift in perspective, it can be just as enriching and exciting as any other month. So, letโ€™s put on our warmest socks, brew a hot cuppa, and give January the warm welcome it deserves!

What to do about it:

  1. First thing – don’t think about it as the worst. Treat it just like any other month.
  2. You don’t have to remove all festive decorations and lights (if you had any). Keep the ones with more general winter theme.
  3. If you know you’re going to feel miserable in January because it happens every year – prepare in advance. Have a gentle self-assessment: ask yourself why you feel this way? Are there any specific reasons? How can you make it better?
  4. Get outside during daylight. Get everything in your power to encourage it: set reminders, invite friends for a walk, take your favourite hot drink, plan where to go and what to explore.
  5. get yourself a proper clothes and shoes for your worst weather: waterproof, windproof, snowproof – depends on where you live. Get the best you can afford – your comfort and health worth it and it can usually last several seasons.
  6. Embrace the darkness: go outside in the evening (make sure its safe). Take a torch or a headlight and try to spot some wildlife if your area has any. I am lucky to have a tawny owl living in the bushes just outside my windows. The late night hooting can be a bit annoying.
  7. If you’re self-employed: get your tax return sorted in advance, ideally before December. There is no other way. But it makes sense to double check it before the deadline – did you actually filled everything? does it need any adjustments? Last year I nearly missed mine because I was sure it was done but it actually wasn’t.

A Warm Goodbye to the Coldest Month

January isnโ€™t here to ruin the fun โ€” itโ€™s just a quieter chapter between the glitter of December and the promise of spring. So, keep the kettle warm, wear something soft, and give yourself permission to take it slow. By the time the first snowdrops appear, youโ€™ll be glad you did.
